John and his wife Mary Brady were members of Long Creek Baptist Church in Warren Co. and moved their church membership to Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Wilkinson County. John served as a Senator from Wilkinson County until 1820. Before the American Revolution, John's father, Robert Hatcher, had moved to Richmond County from Virginia. It was in Richmond County that John married Mary Brady in 1779. In 1780, the Hatcher family "fled the protection of the British" and went to Edgefield County, SC where Robert's brother Benjamin Hatcher lived.. During the American Revolution, John Hatcher, his father Robert Hatcher and three of his brothers, Jeremiah, William and Henry fought in many battles against the British. Major John returned to Georgia after the war as did William. Jeremiah, who lost a leg during the war, remained in SC and became a sheriff in Edgefield Co. Major John served as Justice of the Peace in every county in which he lived in Georgia after reaching adulthood. He served on the boards of several academies and was active in community activies until his death in Wilkinson County in 1835. He is buried in the family cemetery near Toomsboro, GA.
