WILKINSON COUNTY GEORGIA LIBERTY BAPTIST CHURCH HISTORY and MEMBERSHIP Contributed to USGenWeb by Ann Toler atoler@earthlink.net CONSTITUTION AND MEMBERSHIP OF LIBERTY BAPTIST CHURCH (From the Minutes of Liberty Baptist Church, Wilkinson County, GA, 1837-1854) Georgia Wilkinson County Where as a number of Brothers and Sisters of the Baptist denomination living in the county and state aforesaid in and about the neighborhood of James Hatchers, between Mount Nebo Church and the Oconee River on the road leading from Irwinton to the White Bluff on said River, having been dismissed by Letter from other churches of the Baptist faith and order, and for certain good reasons and causes which exist, as well as desiring to keep house for God, have agreed and covenanted to gather to be constituted into a church at the new meeting house built for that purpose near the said James Hatchers on the said road aforesaid, which is known by the name of Liberty. For which purpose we have called for our beloved Brethren in the Ministry John Hughs, Jordin Baker, Henry Messer, from the Ebenezer Association, and Joel P. Leverett from the Washington Association, who met with the Brethren and Sisters on Tuesday, August 29th 1837 at the meeting house aforesaid. The Brethren, according to previous appointment, met at the place appointed on the day above written; John Hughs, Jordin Baker, Henry Messer and Joel P. Leverett; and called for the Letters of Dismission, where upon the following persons came forward and presented these Letters; Lewis Smith and his wife Elizabeth Smith, Lewis Clay and his wife Judy Clay, Milly Ethridge, James Hatcher produced Letters from the church at Bethell, Wilkinson County, Cholson Sanders and his wife Sarah Sanders from the church at new Ebenezer Wilkinson County, and John Bales from Poplar Spring Washington County, and upon examination were found to be orderly and orthodox, and being recommended by Letter as Truth, we the presbytery proceeded to constitute them into a church upon the faith of the Ebenezer Association. Brother Hughs was called to the chair to examine into the standing, and Brother Leverett gave the charge and extended the right hand of fellowship, followed by all the presbytery. Brother Messer delivered the concluding prayer. The church then proceeded to call Brother Hughs to be their Moderator and opened a door for the reception of members. None came forward. Conference adjourned until tomorrow evening. Presbytery: Joel P. Leverett John Hughs Jordin Baker Henry Messer Articles of Faith 1. We believe in one only true and living God, and that there are three persons in the Godhead, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. 2. We believe that the scriptures of the old and new testament are the word of God and the only Rule of Faith and practice. 3. We believe in the doctrine of Eternal Particular Election. 4. We believe in the doctrine of original sin. 5. We believe in man’s impotincy to recover himself from the fallen state he is in by nature of his own free will ability. 6. We believe that sinners are justified in the sight of God only by the imputed righteousness of Christ. 7. We believe that Gods Elect shall be called, converted, reginerated and sanctified by the Holy Spirit. 8. We believe that the Saints shall persevere in and never fall finally away. 9. We believe that baptism and the Lords supper are ordinances of Jesus Christ, and that true believers are the only subjects of these ordinances, and we believe that the true mode of baptism is by immersion. 10. We believe in the resurrection of the dead and a general judgment. 11. We believe that the punishment of the wicked will be Everlasting and the Joys of the Righteous will be Eternal. 12. We believe that no Ministers have a right to the Administration of the ordinances only so as are Regular called and come under imposition of hands by the presbyterys. To provide for the condition of our Brethren of our denomination who feel themselves opprest by reason of the churches having closed their doors against all Ministers and Brethren who favour the institution of the Day, we the church of Christ at Liberty adopt the following resolution: Resolved that any member Brother or Sister being excluded from any of those churches for the above cause alone, being known to us or recommended by any member with whom we are acquainted, that we receive them into Membership in our Body. Resolution introduced and received. August the 30th 1837 – Received in the Constitution: Lewis Smith Lewis Clay James Hatcher John Bales John Kingrey James Jackson William R.
