Again, we are called upon to announce the depature of another from the theatre of life, whose death may be attributed to the same cause. Died, at the residence of Mr. Francis Colley, of this county, on Monday evening, the 30th ult. at the advanced age of 90 years, Mrs. MARY OWENS. The deceased was a native of Virginia, but for the last 45 years has been a resident in this State. Though the subject of this humble tribute had for several years been deprived of the organ of sight, and consequently of many of the pleasures of life, she was ever patient under the afflictions imposed upon her by a righteous Providence, remembering that “Though affliction seem severe, In mercy oft are sent;” and designed as cords of love, to draw the soul from earth and point it to the skies; where attending angels stand as ministering spirits to welcome believers home. We are informed that our deceased friend, had never connected herself with any church; but her friends and relatives entertain a good hope that she has gone to inherit eternal rest. During her afflictions, she not infrequently offered up a petition that the Almighty would call her home, and release her spirit from its clay tenement. She has left numerous relations and friends to mourn her death — and tho’ her locks had been whitened by the frosts of many winters, and age had reduced her frame to more than infant weakness, yet those will remember her with gratitude, and embalm her memory with many silent tears. In all the relations of life she was kind, affectionate, and hospitable; ever ready to extend a helping hand in the hour of distress, and afford a solace to the afflicted and weary pilgrim; but, for all these, we trust she has, ere this, reaped an abundant harvest of celestial joys, a brighter crown and an unfading diadem. Of all the relations of life, there is none so close, and so endearing as that of parent and child. Death cannot quench the undying spark which lives within the heart of an only child and daughter for an earthly parent. We have seen a daughter embrace the cold corpse of a fond parent, and as a last and final token of love, imprint upon her lips affectionate fondest kiss. But, dear friend, mourn not as those who have no hope, thy parent has gone to meet the partners of her bosom — to embrace them again as redeemed and blood washed spirits. She can not come to you, but soon you most tread in her silent footsteps, and be with her a sleeper of the dust, and a companion of the skies. Then, let not thy tears disturb her quiet repose, or thy groans seek to recall her from the tomb; but in patience wait the appointed hour, when God shall call thee hence, to meet at heaven’s eternal doors the ransomed spirit of thy sainted mother. “Too well He knows the twisted strings, Of ardent hearts combined, When rest asunder, how they bleed, How hard to be resigned. Our hearts are fastened to this world, By strong and endless ties, And every sorrow cuts a string, And urges us to rise.” ~~~~~ Additional Comments: Mary Owens was born Mary Carroll 1743 in the State of Virginia, daughter of Henry and Frances Carroll of Carrollton, Maryland.
