Jimmy Carter, right, awards the Silver Star, the nation's third highest medal, to former U.S. Army Capt. H. Lane Dennard Jr., of Gordon. Dennard was cited for valor against an armed and hostile enemy in Vietname in July 1969. Dennard was a company commander at the time and was wounded as his company engaged in a fire fight with the enemy. Dennard is now a law student at the University of Georgia.
