He attended the public schools in Waresboro and later graduated from the Atlanta College of Physicians and Surgeons, in medicine, and from the Atlanta Dental College in the class of 1894. He located in Sylvester and practiced both professions for a number of years and then gave up his professional career for business, in which he was very successful. Dr. Jefford served successively between 1901 until his death in 1960, as a Director, Vice-President, President and Chairman of the Board of the Sylvester Banking Company, but in his later years he was inactive on account of ill health. He became a man of substantial wealth, had great administrative ability, and gave his influence and cooperation in the furtherance of enterprises that have been of great value to Sylvester and Worth County. His liberality and progressiveness made him one of the prominent and influential citizens in Worth County and in the State of Georgia. He served on the building committee of the Worth County Courthouse and of McPhaul Institute to which he was one of the largest contributors. He gave the land for Worth County High School, including the football field and other sports areas. He also gave the land for the Worth County Hospital. He promoted conservation and reforestation on Worth's cut- over lands. He gave a tract of land for use of the FFA organization, which is still in use. He married Mrs. Mary R. Adams McPhaul in 1901, and she also played an important role in the progress of civic affairs. They were world travelers, visiting several countries, including the Holy Land. Dr. Jefford was a Democrat, a fifty year Mason, and served as President of the Sylvester Kiwansis Club.
