He was reared in Terrell County in the Sandhill Community. His parents were farmers. His ddesire was to be a carpenter. During his early manhood he left home seeking the carpenter trade. His first stop was Macon, Georgia, with his brother Ephram, working with him in his blacksmith shop and on carpenter jobs whenever he could and they were available. He spent several months in Macon then he decided to go some other place. He came to Worth County, Sylvester. After being successful in learning the trade of carpentry he was successful in building several of the early old colonial homes here in Sylvester and throughout the County. He was one of the founders, and was the architect and builder of the historic Jones Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church which now stands on the corner of Railroad and Livingston Streets. He was one of the strong pillars of his church. He was a great citizen and was respected by all who knew him. He was married to Miss jane Lucinda Ann Ford, the daughter of Douglas {Doug} N. Ford, of Worth County. They had seven children, Mildred Chapel, Mattie Lee, Lelia Belle, John Douglas, Maude Mordena, Sarah Lenora, and Lurie. Mrs. jane Lucinda Ann Lockette died September 22, 1956.
