Wealthy Sumner Man Killed By Automobile

Sylvester, Ga., November 24 – J.D. Bridges, 58, of Sumner, one of Worth 
county’s leading citizens, was instantly killed when his automobile ran off an 
embankment near the Sylvester Coal and Ice company’s plant here last night.  
He had just secured a block of ice and as he left the ice-house he drove off 
the embankment, turning the car over on himself.  It is supposed he had a 
stroke of apoplexy that caused the accident.

Mr. Bridges came to Worth county locating at Sumner, when he was only 16 years 
old, with a widowed mother whom he supported.  He leaves an estate which has 
been estimated at more than $1,000,000.  He owned 14,000 acres of land, most 
of which is under cultivation, a great deal of property in Sumner and 
considerable property in Sylvester and Albany.  He was interested in a number 
of enterprises being the owner of several sawmills and a large mercantile 
establishment in Sumner.

Funeral services will be held at his home in Sumner Tuesday morning.  Four 
ministers will take part in the ceremony.  Rev. “Uncle” Bill Hammock, an 80 
year old Baptist minister who has known Mr. Bridges all his life; Rev. L. 
Barr, pastor of the Sumner Methodist church; Rev. Alfred Pullen, pastor of the 
Sumner Baptist church and Rev. M.L. Lawson, pastor of the Dawson Methodist 
church.

Mr. Bridges is survived by his wife and 10 children.
