KNOWLES(1801-1857) James Knowles Sr. was born in Georgia c.1801, probably in Hancock Co. He married Lucy Thomas in adjacent Greene Co.in 1823, and had settled in Henry Co. by 1830. His wife Lucy Knowles died in 1837, and is buried in a family cemetery in adjacent Butts Co. Their daughter, Christy Rebecca(who likely married a "Messer")died in 1847 and is buried with an infant son in Butts Co. There were at least three other children: Martha C.(b.1829), Elizabeth(b.1831) and James Bellah(b.1833). On Oct. 12, 1850, James Knowles Sr. bought approximately 430 acres of land along Swift Creek in Dooly Co. from Henry D. Powell for $1200.00[Deed Book B, pg. 505]. This parcel comprised the whole of landlot #99; 75 acres on the westside of lot #100; the northern 1/2 of lot #126(divided by the creek)and 50 acres in the N.W. corner of lot #125. On Dec. 22nd James Knowles Sr. left Henry Co. and arrived in Dooly Co. with his small family on Dec. 30, 1850. He is found on the 1851 Dooly Co. tax digest. At various times he may have lived on each side of Swift Creek, which in 1853 formed the northern county line of newly formed Worth Co. He died in Worth Co. on Aug. 15, 1857. His daughter Martha married George D. Whitfield in Worth Co., Dec. 18, 1856; but, her sister Elizabeth married John T. Hart in Dooly Co., Sept. 15, 1857. She likely then lived with George & Martha Whitfield on the Dooly Co. side of the creek. [Martha C. Whitfield, and daughter Lucy J., are found on the 1880 Worth Co. census, near the Abraham Odom family] Lucy Whitfield later married Abe's son, William David Odom]. Only son, James Bellah Knowles, who was given this letter of administration, had started to school at Fort Early in February 1852, but had returned to Henry Co. by the fall. He entered O'Dell Academy there in January 1853. He attended for two years, then was asked to teach, after learning of his teacher's death- by letter, while visiting his family in Dooly/Worth. He taught at O'Dell for two years, but was studying medicine in Butts Co. when he learned of his father's death. His diary(1852-1858)is in the Georgia State Archives. It supplied many facts about the family. Additional Comments: The middle initial "B" used in this document is not found on any other James Knowles Sr. record. Son, James Bellah Knowles was likely named after Methodist minister, James Bellah(of Hancock & Newton counties).
