The new building, with 6,620 square feet of floor space, is divided into seven stores, with Fong Hing store occupying the corner section at Kamehameha avenue and Lihiwai street. It is a one story building, whereas the old building was a two story affair, and represents an investment of some $75,000 by the K. L. Chock estate. This building to bear the Fong Hing name – the first was rebuilt in 1920 when the front land was sold to the county for widening of the road, and the second was smashed by the tidal wave. With the opening of the building, there are two Fong Hing stores, the other being on Haili street across from the Palace theater. The latter was opened after the tidal wave and will continue to function. The first Fong Hing store was opened in 1895 by Chock Hong, who came here in 1883 when he was 19 from his birthplace, Canton, China. Chock Hong died in 1928. His heir, Koon Leong Chock, a longtime American Factors employee better known as Ah Leong Chock, died in 1942. The sons of Chock Hong include two dentists, two medical doctors, an optometrist and a pharmacist, all born and reared in Waiakea. Pharmacist Wah Kan Chock, a sister, is assistant manager. Another sister, Mrs. Yun Soong Jim, is married to a doctor. Official representative of the Chock estate is Yun How Chock, oldest daughter of K. L. Chock, but the Chocks’ many holdings are a family enterprise. Mrs. Chock Hong, widow of the family founder, lives here on Halai hill with her sons.
