Carvalho, 74, a former member of the territorial legislature, died Saturday* at 3:25 p.m. in Hilo Memorial hospital. A requiem mass was to be celebrated at 9 a.m. this morning at St. Joseph’s church in Hilo. Burial will be in Homelani cemetery. He was born in Ponta Delgada, Azores, April 24, 1873, and came to the islands in 1881. He attended St. Mary’s school, Hilo, and was graduated from Honolulu Normal training school. In 1898 Mr. Carvalho married Maria dos Anjos Bento in Hilo. He had had a long career as educator, serving as supervising principal of the districts of Hilo and Puna, and as principal of Papaikou school before his elections to public office.In 1938 he was elected to the house of representatives. He served in the senate in 1940 and 1942. Surviving him are four daughters, Genevieve, Mrs. Anita Carter, Mrs. Thelma Costa and Mrs. Priscilla Noce of Portland, Ore., and six sons, Virginio A. Jr., Reginald, Albert, Herman, Raymond and Stanley. Additional Comments: *Notation is that Saturday was January 17, 1948.
