Ewaliko, 71, former county chairman and supervisor prior to his retirement from public life, were to be held today from Haili church. Mr. Ewaliko, who had been confined to Hilo Memorial hospital since September, died at 5:15 p.m. Monday*. Services were held at 2:15 p.m. today from Haili church with the Rev. Moses Moku officiating. Burial was to follow in Haili Kulamanu cemetery. All county offices and departments closed at noon today in respect to the prominent civic leader. Mr. Ewaliko was born in Puueo on September 29, 1876, the son of John and Kaanaana (Kualii) Ewaliko. His grandfather was a great philosopher during the reign of King Kamehameha 1. He received his education at St. Mary’s school in Hilo, and Oahu college, Honolulu, now known as Punahou school. He married Julia Kahaunani Long at Wailuku, Maui, on June 11, 1912, after the death of his first wife, Annie Umiamaka. He and his second wife had one daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Handelsmann. He began his political career as a Democrat, later became a Republican and then rejoined the Democratic party. He served as county clerk for six years and was delegate to the Democratic convention held in Baltimore in 1908. He later served as purchasing agent and was elected chairman of the board of supervisors in 1913, serving until 1915. In 1912 he attended the International Longshoremen’s association convention in Seattle, Wash., as a delegate. He was appointed district organizer for the Territory of Hawaii by the American Federation of Labor association and served from 1913 to 1921. He also served as warden for the County of Hawaii jail from 1915 to 1918. He served as a member of the Industrial Accident board, Hawaii county, from 1915 to 1923. Mr. Ewaliko was appointed by Governor Pinkham to serve as a member of the board of appraisers, first land district, Island of Hawaii, for one year; was elected president of the Hawaiian Civic league, Hilo; member of the Ancient Order of Foresters; member of the Seaside club; member of the People’s club; member of the executive board of Ka Hale O Nalii O Hawaii; member of the executive board of Nest of Owls; editor of Life of Hawaii, a Hawaiian newspaper published in Hilo in 1916, and was assistant editor of Ka Hoku O Hawaii, Hawaiian newspaper published in Hilo. He had retired from public life for several years. Besides his widow and daughters his is survived by two sisters, Miss Emily Ewaliko, retired school teacher, and Mrs. Kalei Lyman, a brother, William L. Ewaliko, and three grandchildren.
