Orr jessicanorr@gmail.com February 16, 2012, 7:24 pm Unknown Newspaper, March 29, 1949 JUDGE HAYSELDEN DIES AFTER LONG CAREER ON BENCH Hilo, March 29 (by Radio) – The territory’s longest practicing magistrate, Judge Walter H. Hayselden, 73, died early today in Hilo Memorial hospital. Judge Hayselden was serving his 43rd year in office in Kau under a special waiver in recognition of his long service. He had been confined to the hospital since January 16. The judge who was appointed district magistrate of Kau in September, 1906, has been actively engaged in ranching since 1913. His ranch is at Waiohinu, Kau. Born in 1876 in Honolulu, he was educated at the Fort St. and Punahou schools and Oahu college. In his early life he was employed on the Lanai ranch and as head overseer of Maunalei plantation, Lanai. In 1900 he became timekeeper for the Hutchinson plantation at Naalehu and the following year became head overseer, serving until 1904. He was deputy sheriff of Kau in 1904 and 1905 and practiced in the district courts before his appointment to the bench. He was a Mason, a member of Kilauea Lodge No. 330, F and A.M. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. A. K. Kaaihili of Hilo and Mrs. A. H. Cabrinha and Mrs. H. R. Rennie of Honolulu, and three sons, Claus H., Walter L. and James, all of Honolulu.
