Orr jessicanorr@gmail.com March 2, 2012, 3:23 pm Unknown Newspaper, 1948 LEVI C. LYMAN, EDUCATOR, DIES (By Radiophone) HILO, Oct. 19-Levi C. Lyman, veteran Big Island educator, businessman and member of a kamaaina family, died at his home here tonight. He would have been 82 on Dec. 16. Born in Hilo in 1866, the son of Frederick S. and Isabella C. Lyman, both members of prominent missionary families, he served during the Wilcox revolution and the revolution that resulted in the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893. Mr. Lyman was an educator most of his lifetime, serving 25 years as principal of the Hilo Boarding school. He also found time to take an interest in the business life of Hawaii, having served as a director of the Hilo Electric Light Co. and the First Trust Co. of Hilo. He was educated at Oahu College and at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, N.Y. He began his teaching career at Kamehameha schools in Honolulu and during his lifetime served as a member of the faculty of Hampton Institute, Hampton, Va., where he taught agriculture and did survey work for the institute. He served as a private in the Honolulu Rifles in 1889 and served during the two revolutions. Mr. Lyman was a member of the Masons and a trustee and treasurer of the First Foreign Church of Hilo. Surviving are a son, Orlando H. Lyman of Hilo, and a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Bond of Hawi, Kohala, Hawaii. A sister, Mrs. Esther Lyman McCluskey, resides in Honolulu. There are also two surviving grandchildren, Kenneth Lyman Bond, and Marjorie Bond. Additional Comments: Date written on clipping is October 20, 1948.
