Orr jessicanorr@gmail.com March 6, 2012, 4:55 pm Honolulu Star Bulletin, Tuesday, July 27, 1943 HILO YOUTH IS KILLED IN PLANE CRASH TUCSON, Ariz., July 27, (AP) - Aviation Cadet Gwynn Llewellyn Matthias, 339 Kauila St., Hilo, was killed when a training plane crashed 20 miles southeast of Marana army airfield here Monday. _______ Cadet Matthias, who was 22 years old, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gwynn J. Matthias of Hilo. Mr. Matthias is treasurer-manager of the First Trust Co. of Hilo. He volunteered for army service in 1941, transferring to the air corps in December, 1942. He won top honors in preflight training at Glendale, Cal., and primary training at Thunderbolt field, Ariz. He was graduated from Punahou school in 1938, and attended the University of Washington. For a time he was employed at the Hilo tax office as a junior clerk. Surviving are the parents and two sisters, Mrs. Eleanor Henderson and Miss Geraldine Matthias.
