Z., son of Joseph T. and Alice Armitage; married Gertrude Ripley, Honolulu, Nov. 15, 1916; children, James, Margot and John Armitage; member Hawaiian Lodge No. 21. F. & A. M.; Chamber of Commerce (director 1928 1929); Commercial Club (president 1928-1929); Y. M. C. A. (director), Pacific Club. General experience in the shipping industry of Hawaii, during a period in which activities in Honolulu harbor have shown their greatest sustained increase, had been gained by Mr. Armitage when he was appointed to his present positions as vice-president, general manager and director of the Inter-island Steam Navigation Co., Ltd. He is also vice-president and director of the Kilauea Volcano House Co., and secretary-treasurer and director of Inter-Island Airways, Ltd. Mr. Armitage, a native of New Zealand, had heard of Hawaii for years in correspondence from his uncle, Harry Armitage, the stock broker, who had come to the Islands from New Zealand in 1871. He visited the Territory, arriving on May 24, 1909, decided to remain and joined the shipping department of Castle & Cooke, Ltd. He rose through various positions to become head of the passenger department and assistant manager of the shipping department in January, 1921, upon the death of John Drew. On Jan. 11, 1926, he entered his present position as general manager of the Inter Island Steam Navigation Co., Ltd., and was subsequently elected vice-president and a director. Mr. Armitage was educated in the public schools of New Zealand and the Auckland Grammar School.
