Orr jessicanorr@gmail.com March 2, 2012, 7:30 pm HONLULU STAR BULLETIN February 25, 1949 Surrounded by many of her 155 descendants, Mrs. Harriet Bartels celebrated her 90th birthday at a luau Tuesday. The clan gathered in the patio of Mr. and Mrs. Fred W. Bartels’ home on Wilhelmina Rise, with almost 100 present. The honoree, gowned in purple and wearing a red carnation lei with orchids in her hair and on her shoulder, was seated at the head of the table. Fresh pineapples circled by pastel hibiscus blossoms were used in decoration, and elsewhere about the patio hibiscus, anthuriums and decorated coconuts added a tropical touch. The Rev. Henry Kaupiko, nephew of Mrs. Bartel, offered the invocation. Hawaiian songs and hulas were presented. Mrs. Bartels, the former Miss Harriet Foster Macomber, was born in Ka-u, Hawaii, February 21, 1859. She was married to Capt. William Marchant in Waiohinu, Ka-u, May 23, 1875. Her second husband was Fred W. Bartels. She had 24 children. Mrs. Bartels came to Honolulu 21 years ago, and makes her home with a daughter, Mrs. Archie A. Dunn, and Mr. Dunn. John Macomber, the honoree’s brother, and Mrs. Macomber came from the Big Island for the celebration. Guests other than family members were Miss Poomaikelani Kawananakoa, Harry Fields, Miss Lillian Prigge and Paul Prigge of Kaui, Miss Lulu Meineche, William Meineche, Messrs. and Mmes. Tom Stuart, Louis Silva, Moody Kealiihoomalu, Vic Schoenberg and Mrs. Doris Nelson.
