Dillingham II, general manager of the Oahu Railway & Land Co., was awarded the distinguished service key for 1947 at the Honolulu Junior Chamber of Commerce Founders’ Day banquet Wednesday night. (unreadable part of article) Record of Achievement In making the award, Mr. Dickinson outlined Mr. Dillingham’s record of achievement. At the age of 31, Mr. Dillingham has gone far in business, politics and community service. In his first attempt to win political elective office, he was elected outright to the board of supervisors in the 1946 primary election. He is active in the Republican party. In the field of business, he carries on his shoulders the heavy responsibilities of the general manager of the Oahu Railway & Land Co. and, in addition, is president of the Hawaiian Warriors professional football team. An active churchman, he is a vestryman at St. Andrew’s cathedral and a trustee of Iolani school, which the church supports. He also is a trustee of Palama Settlement. His other organizations include Honolulu Lodge No. 409, F&AM, Aloha Temple Shrine, the Native Sons of Hawaii, the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce, and the Hawaiian wing, civil air patrol, of which he is wing commander. Record in World War II Mr. Dillingham has a notable war record, having held important transportation office assignments in the Pacific area. He entered the army December 7, 1941, as a second lieutenant and was assigned to the G-5 section of the Hawaiian department. On January 1, 1942, he was assigned to the office of cargo and passenger control under the military governor as coordinator of rail transportation. In July, he was promoted to the rank of first lieutenant. In May, 1943, he was assigned to the army port and service command as acting transportation officer and was promoted to the rank of captain two months later. He took part in the invasion of Saipan in 1944 and was promoted to the rank of major on that island in July, 1944. Upon his return to Honolulu he was assigned to the transportation office on the staff of Lt. Gen. Robert C. Richardson Jr., commanding army forces in the middle Pacific, and served there until the end of the war. He was inactivated in February, 1946, and promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the organized reserve corps. Born in Honolulu Mr. Dillingham was born in Honolulu October 14, 1916, the second son of Walter F. and Louise (Gaylord) Dillingham. He received his education at Punahou; Le Rosey, Gastaad, Switzerland; St. Paul’s school, Concord, Mass.; Fountain Valley school, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Harvard university, where he was graduated in 1940. At Harvard, he was president of the Hasty Pudding theatrical club and a member of the A.D. club. He was on the Harvard polo team, and played championship polo in Hawaii in inter-island competition. He married Miss Frances Andrews, daughter of Vice Adm. and Mrs. Adolphus Andrews, in New York on April 26, 1941. They have two children, Frances Elizabeth and Benjamin Franklin III. Mr. Dillingham, in accepting the award, pledged to continue in his efforts to aid the community, and to “strive to do better.” Alexander D. Castro, a charter member of the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce, urged the young men of the junior chamber to assume the leadership and responsibilities which are being turned over to them by the organization’s senior members.
