McCarthy, Democrat, was inaugurated as governor of Hawaii at an impressive ceremony in the throne room in Iolani Palace. Franklin J. Lane, then secretary of the interior, was present. So was John F. Stone, who was appointed on that day to be secretary to the governor. He remained in that position during the McCarthy administration and three years of the administration of the late Wallace Rider Farrington, Republican. Mr. Stone observed the 30th anniversary of his entrance upon a career of public service by putting in a full shift in the public relations department at Castle & Cooke. Resigning from the governor’s office on Nov. 1, 1924, Mr. Stone joined Castle & Cooke, where he served until the organization of USO, just prior to World War II. He went to USO as controller and became director for Hawaii. After six years in that service he returned to Castle & Cooke at the first of this year. During the six weeks prior to his installation as Governor McCarthy’s secretary, Mr. Stone served in the same capacity for Governor Lucius E. Pinkham. He had been chosen by Mr. McCarthy for the position and when Mr. Pinkham’s secretary, William Wayne, became adjutant general the governor asked him to take an interim appointment. He was at that time a Star-Bulletin reporter assigned to the capitol beat. Incidentally, his installation as Governor McCarthy’s secretary took place on Mr. Stone’s second wedding anniversary. He had forgotten Tuesday, until reminded, that the day was a political anniversary. He had not forgotten that it was his 32nd wedding anniversary, which may be a record among men who have been married that many years.
