Miss Catton was the first island born woman to graduate from a professional school of social work and became a pioneer in initiating medical social service measures in the territory. Besides developing the social service organization from a staff of one, herself, to 14 workers, Miss Catton has expanded its scope to serve Kauikeolani Children’s and Kaukini hospitals in addition to the Queen’s hospital. The pioneer social service worker was born in Huelo, Maui. Her parents came to Hawaii in 1878. Miss Catton was educated in private schools in Honolulu and Scotland. She entered the New York School of Social Work in 1917 and majored in hospital social service for two years. Upon her return to the islands she interested the Hospital Flower society in promoting such a service locally. In 1923 the society gained the consent of the directors of the Queen’s hospital to try medical social service as a one year experiment. It was so successful they asked that it be continued. The present organization, previously named the Hospital Flower Society and the Hospital Social Service association, is chiefly supported by its member hospitals and the Honolulu Community Chest. Medical social workers assist doctors in treatment by bringing to their attention personal and environmental problems of patients and help patients in meeting and overcoming these problems. Miss Catton was appointed director of the social service, Medical Social Service association of Hawaii, in 1923.
