She is Mrs. Mary Kydd Johnston, widow of the late David Johnston, Edinburgh jeweler. She now lives at Dundee. Mrs. Johnston is the mother of six sons and a daughter. Three of the sons whom she is coming to Hawaii to visit are prominent in the sugar industry here. She will be accompanied by her eldest son, John Kydd Johnston, former executive at Calcutta, India, associated with the McNeill interests, jute brokers. He was with that company for 35 years with time out to serve his country in World War I. He is now at Kerriemuir, Scotland, a member of the town council. He has two married daughters and a son at the University of Edinburgh medical school. Mrs. Johnston and her son will visit the three sons here and their families for an indefinite period. They are: Robert Johnston, factory superintendent at the Oahu Sugar Co., Waipahu. He was formerly assistant manager of the Honolulu Plantation Co. of Aiea. He is president of the Hawaiian Sugar Technologists and a graduate of Edinburgh university. Archibald Johnston is office manager at the Hutchinson Sugar Co., at Naalehu, and was formerly with the Hawaiian Agriculture Co. at Pahala. He has been active for many years in civil and political affairs of the Big Island and is an official of the Hawaiian Red Cross, the Boy Scouts and the Tuberculosis association. He was also trained in his profession in Edinburgh. The youngest son, Allen, now ranch superintendent at Naalehu, came to the islands as a boy and has been with Brewer plantations for 20 years. Mrs. Johnston visited Hawaii once before, in 1931 with her only daughter, Jean, who is now living near London. Her husband is the London architect, George Fairweather. John Johnston is making his first visit here. Before returning to Scotland she and her son will stop at the Canadian cattle ranch of son David. He lives near Lloydminster, Alberta. He is a veteran of both world wars and was decorated with one of the king’s honors, member of the order of the British empire. They will also be guests of relatives in Boston before flying home from New York. One son, James, is in Aberdeen, Scotland, as manager of Lawsons, Ltd. During World War I Mother Johnston had five sons in active service and has lived to see her family take an honored share in the Scotsman’s role of covering the world and keeping it right.
