Orr jessicanorr@gmail.com March 2, 2012, 9:23 pm UNKNOWN NEWSPAPER May 29, 1948 Naalehu, May 29 – Mrs. Jennie Jones Lowry, a teacher since 1905 wil[l] retire in June from her post at Naalehu school. Mrs. Lowry started her teaching career in 1905 at Waiohinu school and was there until 1913 when she married Robert Lowry. She did not teach for six years but returned in 1919 to Waiohinu and resumed teaching. She continued until 1928 when the school was moved to Naalehu and has taught there ever since. Mrs. Lowry is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. G. W. C. Jones and was born at the present Kahuku ranch on August 5, 1883. She was educated at St. Andrews Priory, Kamehameha School for Girls and Honolulu high school. She graduated from the Territorial Normal and Training school in 1905. Mrs. Lowry’s success in teaching may possibly be attributed to her trust in children. She believed in putting them on their honor and at all times was able to leave the room knowing the children would carry on. She collected varied objects so the children could see what they were studying. A recent visit to the school found Mrs. Lowry disposing of her collection so others could carry on her idea of visual training. Mrs. Lowry has no definite plans but will live at present with a daughter Mrs. Ailene Townsend of Honolulu. She has one other daughter, Mrs. Belle Kahoiwai and seven grandchildren.
