Ai, 76, of 1504 Alewa Drive, retired property disposal officer for the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, died yesterday in Queen's Hospital. Mr. Ai was one of the original eight Islanders who qualified for U.S. Civil Service jobs in 1919. He began as a clerk with the U.S. Army Transport Service, Hawaiian Quartermaster Depot, Pier 5. After 40 years of service, he retired in 1960 as property disposal officer for the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. Mr. Ai was active in both community and civic affairs. In 1959 he served as Hawaiian Department commander of the American Legion and also had been a president of the Chang Wing Yong Tong. He also was active with Hawaiian Lodge Number 21, the York and Scottish Rite Bodies and Patrol of the Masonic Lodge. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Borthwick Mortuary. The American Legion, Hawaii Department will conduct services at 8 p.m. Friends may call again after 8 a.m. Moday at the mortuary. Masonic rites will be conducted at 10:45 a.m. Burial will follow in the National Cemetery of the Pacific, Punchbowl. He is survived by his widow, Frances; a daughter, Mrs. Isbelle Iida of Kauai; three brothers, Kin, Lloyd and Wallace Ai Chang; four sisters, Mrs. Alice A. C. Wong of Maryland, Mrs. Emma C. Yim, Mrs. En Yin (Charlotte) Chung and Mrs. Harry K. M. (Eleanor) Chong; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
