Harbottle, 77, one of the oldest residents of Waikiki, died at his Ala Moana home at 1 p.m. Monday*. His wife, Mary Kamaolipua, died two years ago this month. He was born in Kipahulu, Maui, April 19, 1871, son of the later Mr. and Mrs. Kahuole, and was adopted at birth by Isaac H. Harbottle**. After attending the public school there, he was sent to Japan in 1882 by King Kalakau to study the Japanese language in the Peer’s college in Tokyo, a school dedicated to the education of all the children of the royal family of Japan. He was the schoolmate of the crown-prince who later became Emperor Yoshihito. He remained there until 1888 then returned to Hawaii. Later he attended the Kamehameha school and graduated in 1893. Upon receiving a commission, he taught school in Kipahulu for two years, then came to Honolulu to become law clerk for Paul Newman, one of the best attorneys of his day. He later entered the employ of Lewers and Cooke, Ltd. When the immigration department under the Honolulu customs service was opened here in charge of Joshua K. Brown, he was employed as a Japanese interpreter. On March 1, 1902, he was appointed clerk and Hawaiian and Japanese interpreter and translator in Honolulu tax office. Later he was selected as official searcher of land titles and subsequently as deputy assessor and collector for the Honolulu district. Mr. Harbottle was one of the best linguists in the Territory, speaking the Hawaiian, English, and Japanese languages fluently. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Sarah Kamawiwoole, and eight daughters, Mrs. Henry Thompson, Mrs. Robert Crowell, Mrs. William Mitchell, Mrs. Richard Nelson, Mrs. Henry Kaahea, Mrs. Douglas Frias, Mrs. Adrian McPherson, Mrs. Daniel Aona, and one son, Isaac K. Harbottle Jr., and 30 grandchildren. Serving in the priesthood of the reorganized church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for many years, he was an ardent close friend of the well- known Patriar—Gilbert J. Waller. The body will lie in state at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1666 Mott-Smith Dr. after tonight. Funeral service will be held at the church at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Kaahea, Irma Frias, Buddie McPherson, Kamehaikana Aona, and one son, Isaac H. Harbottle Jr., with the Honolulu fire department. Also by an adopted grandson, David Piikoi Harbottle, 30 grandchildren, and one sister, Sarah Kamakawiwaole.
