Orr jessicanorr@gmail.com March 6, 2012, 4:42 pm Star Bulletin, Wednesday, August 19, 1953 JUNE M. JOHNSON BURIAL WILL BE LAST CHAPTER IN DUAL TRAGEDY The last chapter in a double tragedy will be written here soon when the ashes of Mrs. June Matthias Johnson, former Honolulu resident who drowned August 7 in Puget Sound are returned for interment. Mrs. Johnson was the daughter of Mrs. Jessie C. Matthias, cashier at Hawaiian Trust Company and the late W. G. Matthias, treasurer of Lewers & Cooke. The ashes will be flown from Olympia, Washington for interment in Oahu Cemetery with her father. FOLLOWS HUSBAND Mrs. Johnson followed her husband, Sergeant Ray Johnson, in death. A member of the Second Division, he had been missing in Korean action for 18 months. Early this year she received word he had been killed. His body was returned in April this year. They mere* married December 31, 1950. Diminutive Mrs. Johnson drowned during a yachting trip with friends. Her body was recovered August 9 seven miles from the scene where she disappeared. A prank she planned turned to tragic irony. She told one passenger she was going over the side to hide and would come up under the bow of the boat. She slipped over the side but was never seen alive again. EXCELLENT SWIMMER Mrs. Johnson was known to be an excellent swimmer, but it is probable she struck her head when rolling overboard. The water was said to be rough at the time of the accident and the cruiser was rolling considerably. When she didn't appear after some 15 minutes, the craft was searched. Then the boat put out again to search the waters. According to Olympia newspaper accounts there was no sign of foul play. And an autopsy showed death had apparently been caused by drowning. ROOSEVELT GRADUATE Born in Honolulu March 16, 1921 Mrs. Johnson was graduated from Roosevelt High School and Cannon's School of Business. Only four feet tall, the tiny blonde weighed about 85 pounds. She had just finished working with the Washington State Legislature. Mrs. Johnson left here in December, 1952, after working with the Army at Fort Armstrong. During the war she was also employed with the Army.
