Orr jessicanorr@gmail.com March 29, 2012, 4:19 pm Honolulu Advertiser, Wednesday, September 24, 1958 Optician To Royalty Dr. Lucas Dies at 94, Isle Resident Since 1893 Dr. Severio Eugene Lucas, 94, a resident of Hawaii for more than 60 years died Monday afternoon at St. Francis Hospital. He was a retired optician and the first of his profession in the Islands. Early in his practice he was called to fit the late Queen Liliuokalani with her first glasses. He numbered among his patients members of royalty and persons from all walks of life. Dr. Lucas was in perfect health until two months ago. Until his death, his mind remained alert. He was born in Castello Tesino, Tyrol, Austria, on Dec. 2, 1863. He left his homeland at the age of 14 years and settled first in Montreal, Canada. He moved to the United States and in 1893 came to Hawaii. He was naturalized on Sept. 21, 1906, by Sanford B. DOle. In 1902 Dr. Lucas married Henrietta Eckart, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Maximillian Eckart of Maui. Six children were born to the couple, all of whom are living. Dr. Lucas sopke five languages fluently. He was frequently called as an interpreter for the French, Italian and Spanish ships that docked in Honolulu harbor. He was one of the first homesteaders at Kapaa, Kauai, settling there in 1918. The family joined him in 1919 and made their home there until 1925. Dr. Lucas retained his residence at Kapaa, and at his Honolulu home, 2013 Puukapu St. A staunch Democrat, Dr. Lucas was active in party politics and was a candidate for the House of Representatives and Supervisor. Dr. Lucas returned to his birthplace in 1921 to spend one year with relatives and friends. Dr. and Mrs. Lucas observed their 50th wedding anniversary Nov. 29, 1952, when their children honored them with a nine-course Chinese dinner. Survivors include his wife and their children, sons, Eugene S. Jr., Leon, Joseph, August A., all of Honolulu; Anton, now living in Switzerland, Jack A., of San Diego, Calif., and a daughter Mrs. Lester (Adele) Roderick of this city. There are seven grandchildren. His brother Cassiano Lucas, who visited here in 1954, lives in Oakland, Calif. Friends may call at Borthwick Mortuary chapel from 6 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and after 7:30 a.m. Friday. The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. tomorrow in the chapel. The procession will leave at 9:40 a.m. Friday for St. John's Church where a requiem mass will be held at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Oahu cemetery immediately after the mass.
