Orr jessicanorr@gmail.com March 2, 2012, 3:25 pm Unknown Newspaper, February 1948 CAPT. MADSEN, 66, EX-HARBOR PILOT, DIES IN HOSPITAL. Capt. Mads A. Madsen, 66, ended a sea-going career Sunday morning* at 4:10 when he died at Queen’s hospital. Capt. Madsen was born in Svendborg, Denmark, July 19, 1861, and came to Honolulu July 9, 1881. In 1905 Capt. Madsen was commander of the bark John Ena and kept that post for 10 years, when he became harbor pilot. He went from schooner to steam as a mate, and later as master for the Matson Lines. Capt. Madsen was placed on service retirement November 1, 1931, but couldn’t give up the sea. In 1936 he made a three month trip to the South Seas and Australia, but without the responsibilities of a ship’s officer; he was just a passenger. Capt. Madsen and his family lived at 1028 Green St. after he became harbor pilot. Mrs. Madsen, who sailed with Capt. Madsen on many trips, died in 1932. Surviving are a son, Milton A. Madsen; daughters, Mrs. Matilda Podmore of Hilo, Mrs. Dagmar M. Nolan of Honolulu, and Mrs. Eva M. Sroat of Honolulu. He is also survived by six grandchildren. Services over the ashes will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1 in the chapel of the chimes, Williams mortuary. The Rev. Henry P. Judd will officiate. Burial will be at the Columbarian at Nuuanu cemetery. The family has requested that no flowers be sent, but contributions may be made toward any worthy cause.
