Mrs. Matthias was found dead at 10:30 Sunday morning in her gas filled apartment at 421-A John Ena Rd. The body was to be cremated today at Williams' mortuary. Mrs. Matthias left a note in which she said she was "horribly discouraged" because she had to seek a new job. She asked to be buried beside her husband, who died two years ago. Her father died about a year ago. She had resided in Honolulu since 1931. She was born in Albuquerque, N.M., June 17, 1906. Mrs. Matthias was a sister of Donald Darrow of 1701 Kewalo St. Mrs. Matthias was employed at the Elks' club as cashier-stenographer. Miss Lorene Davidson of 425 John Ena Rd. told police she asked Mrs. Matthias to have dinner with her at 7:30 Saturday night. Mrs. Matthias, who appeared restless and despondent, refused. Miss Davidson left. About 10:30 Sunday morning Miss Davidson knocked on Mrs. Matthias' door, received no answer. Looking into the parlor through a window Miss Davidson saw Mrs. Matthias kneeling with her head on the couch. Miss Davidson called Sgt. Michael Weisgarber, 13th Field Artillery, Schofield Barracks, who climbed in a window and opened the doors and windows. Four burners on the gas stove were open. Officer George Wessel found on the ground a note, reading, "Please don't come in with lighted cigaret."
