Charles Henry Rose Sr., former territorial senator and sheriff of the city- county of Honolulu, died at the Mano Convalescent home Thursday* afternoon after an illness of two years. Mr. Rose was 74. His home was at 7620 Kalanianaole highway. Friends may call at the Borthwick mortuary from 6 to 9 Sunday night. Burial will be in Nuuanu cemetery at 9 a.m. Monday. Mr. Rose is survived by two sons, Charles Henry Jr. and Frank S., and a sister, Mrs. Minnie Charlock, all of Honolulu. Mr. Rose was born November _, 1873, and was one of the first students at the St. Louis college. He was a member of the Kamehameha lodge No. 1, St. Louis Alumni association, Ancient Order of Forresters, Native Sons of Hawaii, Hawaiian Civic club and Chiefs of Hawaii. In 1899 he married Miss Rosie M_ Senna of Kohala, Hawaii. He was associated with the old Wilde_ Steamship Co. before it merged into the Inter-Island Steam Navigation Co., and was with the latter firm until 1907. In 1908 he was elected deputy sheriff and held that position until he was appointed sheriff in 1915 to succeed William K. Jarrett. He was elected territorial senator from Oahu in 1925, and in 1930 was defeated by John H. Wilson in the mayoral election. Mr. Rose retired from public office in 1940 because of ill health and was succeeded as deputy sheriff by Leon K. Sterling. Additional Comments: *Thursday was January 15, 1948.
