Charles Blake of Lawai, attorney at law and until recently deputy tax assessor of Koloa district, was injured while crossing the bridge over Wailua river Sunday afternoon and died a short time later in the Lihue hospital. He was riding in an auto with Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell of Homesteads. When the bridge was reached, he leaned out of the machine to look ahead and in some way came in contact with the upper works of the bridge. As is well known, the bridge is quite narrow. The injured man was rushed to the hospital and everything possible done for him, but his condition was such that life could not be saved. The funeral was held at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon and was largely attended by friends of the deceased. A coroner's jury empanelled on the case worked all of this morning, not finishing until the early afternoon. Rumors were flying around which caused some talk of carelessness as the cause of the tragedy. The jury decided, however, after hearing all the available testimony, that it was a case of accident. It developed during the hearing that witnesses were uncertain about Mr. Blake having struck the bridge. The wound was on the head and had the appearance of having been produced by some sharp instrument, making it seem probable that his head came in contact with a pointed part of the machinery of the auto.
