Joaquin Silva Cabral, wharf worker brought from Honolulu to Kauai by the Lord Young Engineering Co. in connection with their reconstruction of the Waimea wharf, was drowned while swimming in the Waimea river last Sunday. The employees under Superintendent McDonald had worked during the morning, and after knocking off for the day, a number went in the water near the mouth of the river for a plunge. Cabral, when last seen by two of his mates, was about 150 yards further down the river than they and apparently wading in water not more than breasthigh. The two companions, however, observed him to disappear below the water and without thinking anything amiss, resumed their aquatic disputations when they realized that Cabral had not reappeared. Upon investigating the immediate vicinity of the accident, no sign of the man could be seen, and it was not until some 15 or 20 minutes later that a Hawaiian named Kaweheiwa brought up the body. Prompt efforts at restoration of life failed. The coroner's jury yesterday brought in a verdict of accidental drowning. The dead man leaves a wife in Honolulu.
