The untimely death of William Ellis last Thursday took from the community a man who had been identified with it through practically the whole of his life. Born at Lahaina, June 6, 1868, he came to Lihue as a little boy, being adopted and brought here by Joseph I. At the early age of 14, he went into the employ of Mr. William Hyde Rice, assisting in the beef business, in which he gradually worked up until he was placed in charge of it. He remained in Mr. Rice's employ for some 25 years, until he was appointed Deputy Sheriff about 10 years ago. His facility in both Hawaiian and English, and his intimate knowledge of the Island and of all classes of its people made him a capable and efficient officer of the law. He was exceptionally active in all church, Sunday School, and C. E. affairs, and was the mainstay of these organizations in all matters calling for initiative and executive. That he was very highly regarded among the Hawaiians is evident from the numbers who came from far and near to testify their sympathy and affection. The funeral, which took place Friday afternoon at the Hawaiian church under the charge of Mr. William Hyde Rice, assisted by Rev. S. Kaulili, was largely attended by all classes and was fittingly impressive. Mr. Rice's address was particularly appropriate and effective. The pallbearers were the deputy sheriffs of the various districts, and the honorary pallbearers were the officials of the court. The deceased leaves a widow and 14 children, seven sons and seven daughters, most of whom are grown up.
