R. HUGHES. Mr. R. L. Hughes, cashier and manager of the merchandise department of the Kauai Railway Company, died at the Eleele hospital at 9:45 o'clock last Wednesday evening, October 18. The body was taken to Honolulu in the Kanau on Saturday night and cremated, and funeral services were held there. Mr. Hughes was taken ill about four weeks ago, appendicitis being the immediate trouble. The appendix was successfully treated, but it had caused an abscess on the liver, and the latter resulted in death. Dr. Waterhouse did everything in his power for the patient, even sleeping in the room with him toward the last, but without avail. Mr. and Mrs. John A. Scott of Hilo, father and mother of Mrs. Hughes; and Mrs. Hughes and the children accompanied the body to Honolulu. The deceased is survived by Mrs. Hughes, two children, mother, a brother, and a sister. The funeral of the late Mr. Hughes took place from Central Union Church in Honolulu on Sunday, interment being in Nuuanu cemetery. Richard Lyon Hughes was born at Fresno, Cal., December 5, 1883. He was educated in California schools and afterward completed a business course at Poughkeepsie, New York. He was first connected with the Weed Lumber Co. at San Francisco for three years as bookkeeper and cashier, and for six years before coming to the Islands was located at Portland, Ore., as purchasing agent and in charge of the office of the Weed Lumber Company. He came to the Islands on a vacation trip and on the steamer met Miss Margaret Scott of Hilo, who became his wife in June 1913. In place of returning to the coast, therefore, Mr. Hughes became associated with the Kauai Railway Company at Eleele as cashier and manager of the merchandise department. While in Portland, Mr. Hughes was prominent in music circles, he possessing a splendid baritone voice. On Kauai he has been prominent in church, social, and business life and was highly esteemed by everyone fortunate enough to know him well. The two bright and interesting children left fatherless are Richard Lyon Hughes, Jr., aged two years and five months; and Margaret Virginia Hughes, aged five months. The death of Mr. Hughes cast an unusual gloom over the entire island. A meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, of which he was a member, scheduled for Thursday, was postponed for a week on account of it, and social functions all over the island were called off.
