On the afternoon of July 4th, Joseph I, commonly known as Iokepa, a mail carrier, passed away at his home in Nawiliwili. About 49 years of age and a widely-known Hawaiian of many good qualities, his demise will be sincerely mourned by many. He leaves a wife and four little children behind. Of his earlier life but little is known beyond the fact that he was born on Kauai. As far back as 1893 he was a police officer in Honolulu under the Queen's regime and came to Kauai later and was employed in the same capacity under the several sheriffs and was considered to be a fearless and efficient man. For the last 10 years he held the US Mail Contract between Lihue and Hanalei. He was a democrat in politics and ran several times for sheriff of the county of Kauai but was defeated each time. The funeral took place on Friday at Lihue and was attended by his numerous friends.
