Last Friday morning at eight o'clock, Senkichi Ichioka paid the penalty for his murder of little Tomiko Tanaka on March 23 of this year. Iochioka was hanged in the Oahu Prison. The hanging was not done by the old-style process by which the jailer simply pulled a rope and saw the victim fall. Three electric buttons were arranged on a wall in the room removed from the hanging. Three prison "trustees" pushed the three buttons simultaneously. One of them was connected with the trap under the doomed man. The other two were not connected. So no one knows who hanged Ichioka. This is the only murder of this kind that has been committed on Kauai in many years. The murderer was hanged in a little over two months after he committed the deed. He would have been hanged in less time than that if an unlooked for petition had not been sent to the governor recommending mercy. This sure and sudden justice will surely make other offenders hesitate a long time before they kill.
