Lihue had a murder Saturday night, a Filipino named Valentine Ipong being killed. Juan Pacero, a fellow countryman of the dead man, is under arrest and is charged with the crime. The shooting took place in the Filipino camp near the dance hall and appears to have resulted from an argument over the ownership of a pipe which Valentine had found at the baseball park. Juan claimed the pipe, but Valentine refused to give it up. After this preliminary argument, Valentine went inside the dance hall. Juan went away but soon returned with a hatchet, and it is alleged that he attempted an assault on Valentine with that weapon but was seized by the arms by bystanders. Valentine was held by other spectators, although he made desperate efforts to get at the other man. Finally he was released and immediately started out to find Juan. When he came up with the latter, it is alleged, Juan opened fire with a 32-calibre revolver, emptying the gun of its five shots. Valentine fell, mortally wounded. The police were summoned and arrested Juan. Valentine was rushed to the hospital but died within 15 minutes after reaching there. The shooting occurred about 10:30 Saturday night. It is claimed that both of the men had been drinking. Both men had been employed as laborers on the plantation. Yesterday the assailant confessed to the shooting and let it be understood that he considered he had done so in self defense, indicating that that will be his plea in court. A coroner's jury examined many witnesses and finally came to a verdict to the effect indicated above. The case will come to trial before the November term of the Circuit Court.
