A 15-year-old half-Hawaiian, half-Chinese girl named Helen Maluna was drowned last Sunday in the Kalihiwai stream, competent help being summoned much too late to allow resuscitation efforts to be of any avail. Two small children accompanied her at the time, none of the trio, however, being able to swim. Helen preceded the others into the stream, suddenly exclaiming, "Go back, it is too deep here," and sank. Frightened, the youngsters ran for help, but it is claimed an hour had elapsed before John Akana finally reached the body from which life had very evidently been extinct for some time.
