Makuhani Punilei Manimani, a Hawaiian boy aged 19, was accidentally killed while hunting last Tuesday morning in the Kahana valley, a branch of Olokele. He was shot accidentally by his uncle, Robert Nawai, who was hunting with him. According to Nawai's story, the two men were goat hunting and sighted quite a large band of goats on one of the ridges running out of the valley. Nawai told the boy that he would climb the ridge and get behind the goats while the boy stayed about where he was and Nawai would drive the goats toward him. This was agreed upon. Nawai then climbed the hill behind the goats and shot one. Part of the band ran down the hill toward the spot where Nawai had left the boy. The rest of them ran straight down the ridge at about right angles to the course taken by the others. Nawai fired several shots at this band but failed to hit any. He then started down the hill towards the spot where he had left his nephew, and he wondered at the time that he had heard no shots as the goats had practically passed over the spot where he had left him. When he arrived there, Manimani was nowhere in sight. He called out for him and was answered by a hail high up on the ridge. He climbed up and found the boy sitting on the ground holding his side. Manimani told him that he was shot, and Nawai thought at first he was fooling but soon saw that the boy was telling the truth. Instead of staying down on the side hill as he had planned with his uncle, the boy had climbed the hill and waited up on the ridge. When Nawi fired at the goats that had run down the ridge, he had hit Manimani in the abdomen. Nawai tried to carry the boy down the hill, but the boy complained that it hurt him too much, so he was forced to leave him while he went for help. He went to the boy's home which is a kuliana in Olokele valley. He returned with the boy's father, and they brought along a horse to carry the boy home. The time consumed in the trip for help had taken about four hours. When they reached the spot where Nawai had left him, the boy was barely conscious. He told the father that the shooting was an accident. The father and Nawai then started to carry him down to the horse, but he died before they reached it. A coroner's inquest was held in Waimea on Wednesday evening, and the coroner's jury brought in a verdict of accidental death.
