SUDDEN DEATH AT MAKAWELI. Robert Manthei of Makaweli committed suicide Saturday last by hanging himself. He was an old resident of Kauai, having lived for many years at Kekaha. Eight years ago his daughter was drowned near Camp 7 at Robinson's gate as she was going home from a dance through a heavy rainstorm. A sudden flood of water across the road caught the horse she was riding and carried them both to the flood gate where she became entangled in the debris and perished. A few weeks ago the wife died, thus leaving the husband alone in the world and discouraged. His unhappy bereavements no doubt brought on the melancholia that ended in suicide. Mr. Manthei has lived on Kauai for many, many years, and his numerous friends regret his sad death.
