Mrs. Lydia Bertha Miller passed away at the home of her daughter in Honolulu on Tuesday, Jan. 2nd, 1912, at 4 PM at the age of 51 years, 11 months, and 5 days, death resulting from heart failure. Deceased had been in Honolulu since last September to which place she had gone in quest of better health and had to all appearance, entirely recovered and was in the act of returning to her home in Koloa when death's messenger called her to her eternal home. She had taken leave of her friends and completed arrangements to sail on Tuesday's Kinan, but Tuesday morning she was found by one of her daughters, lying unconscious on her bedroom floor in which condition she remained until the end came at four o'clock in the afternoon. Mrs. Henry Blake, a daughter who resides in Koloa, was immediately wirelessed for, but was unable to reach the bedside before her mother had passed away. The deceased was a woman widely known throughout the islands for the deep interest she always took in church work, having from childhood displayed characteristics of a peaceful, loving Christian spirit. Her education was obtained at St. Andrew's Priory under the guidance of Sisters Beatrice and Albertina. Completing her education, she returned to her home in Koloa and here took up school teaching under the direction of Dr. J. W. Smith and wife in connection with the Episcopal Church with which she had been affiliated from childhood. Later on she became identified with Dr. J. W. Smith and sister. At the age of 21, deceased was united in marriage to E. C. Miller, a highly respected young man in the employ of the Koloa Plantation in the capacity of mason. To this happy union, eight children were born. Special funeral services, conducted by Rev. Hopwood of the Kamehameha School, the institution which all her children attended, one of whom is at present a student there, was held at William's undertaking parlors, a special choir from the school rendering some very touching music. On Wednesday the Kinau, as a special, brought the remains, accompanied by the family of the deceased to Koloa where the body was kept in state until the following Sunday afternoon when funeral services was conducted by Rev. J. M. Lydgate and Rev. Kaulili at 3 PM, at which a special choir assisted, interment taking place in the Koloa Hawaiian Church Cemetery. The pallbearers were C. B. Blake, Antone Perry, William Elliot, A. G. Kaulukou, John Naleimaile, Henry Spaulding. Surviving are Fred Miller, Koloa; M. Miller, Honolulu; Mrs. H. Blake, Koloa; J. K. Miller, Honolulu; C. E. Miller, Hilo; Charlie Miller; Miss Albertina Miller, Normal School, Honolulu; Miss Lydia Miller, Kamehameha School, Honolulu, all of whom have the united sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement.
