K. Shiraishi, one of the old-time Japanese who has been on Kauai for the past 38 years, was drowned at Haena last Monday. Shiraishi and a number of his friends were bathing and fishing at the Haena beach. He got into a current that was too strong for him and was carried out to sea. Shiraishi was a rice planter. He had just finished planting his rice crop for this season. As a number of his friends had also just got their crop in they all decided that they would celebrate with a fishing trip. They went to Haena on Sunday night and spent most of the night fishing for crabs with torches and spears. The next morning they decided that they would go farther out onto the reef and try for ulua with glass boxes and dong spears. it was at this time that he got into the current that swept him under. His friends tried to rescue him but were unable to do so until after he was lifeless. Shiraishi was 68 years old at the time of his death. The first 20 years that he lived in Hawaii were spent on various plantations of Kauai. He was at various times on McBryde, Lihue, Kilauea, and the old Princeville plantations. Shortly after the Princeville Plantation ceased raising sugar cane, he went into the rice business for himself and has been a successful planter ever since.
