EMPLOYEE KILLED IN AUTO ACCIDENT. Matsuichi Soma, an employee of the Makee Sugar Company, died at the Kealia hospital last Wednesday evening from internal injuries sustained as the result of an automobile accident that afternoon on the first turn of the government road just opposite the Kealia hotel. According to eye witnesses of the fatal accident, about 4:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, G. Hironaka, a laboratory employee of the Makee Sugar Company, driving Ford No. 1209 owned by himself, accompanied by the unfortunate boy in the front seat, was going toward the Kealia hospital and skidded on the wet pavement just before coming to the concrete bridge, the front wheels of the car breaking down the low fence on the right-hand side of the road. In some strange manner, a long piece of 2x4 which lined the top of the fence and loosened only at one end by the impact, fell on the hood of the car and then was forced through the windshield straight at the chest of the occupant of the right front seat. The force of the impact flattened the back of the seat, and the piece of 2x4 continued on its way through the back curtain of the car, remaining in that position when the car finally came to a standstill. The injury to Soma was not thought to be serious at first as the lad was conscious and could walk, although not without support. He was rushed to the Kealia hospital but died at 8:30 PM, four hours after the accident. A coroner's inquest over the remains was held on Friday, but no verdict was rendered, the jury deciding to postpone the inquest until Tuesday to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident more thoroughly before arriving at a verdict. The deceased was only 19 years old and is survived by his parents, both living at Kealia, and three younger sisters and a brother. He had been employed as truck helper at the Kealia store for the past year and also was a member of the Sunrise team of the Kealia league.
