Manuel T. Sousa, a very old resident of Kauai, father of Lihue's bandmaster Joseph A. Sousa, died at the Lihue hospital last Tuesday evening after an operation for an ailment which had bothered him for 15 years. Mr. Sousa came to the islands in 1882. Twenty-five years were spent at Kealia and Kilauea, where he was overseer and the last nine years with his sons. Deceased was a man of fine habits and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. His funeral was largely attended, the Lihue band heading the procession. He left a widow and four sons: Joseph A. and Antone Sousa of Lihue, and Manuel and John, who are in California. The son Manuel came down last winter to visit his parents. Mr. Sousa is said to have been the first Portuguese on Kauai to send his sons to Honolulu schools.
