MRS. MENDELL WELCKLER DIES IN CALIFORNIA

  Word has been received of the death of Mrs. Mendell Welcker at her home in 
Berkeley, Calif., on December 9.
  Mrs. Welcker (Eliza Gay) was an old time resident of these islands.
  She was born in New Zealand, the daughter of Capt. Thomas Gay and his wife, 
Jane Sinclair Gay. She came to the islands when her grandmother, Mrs. 
Elizabeth Sinclair, and her parents and other members of the Sinclair family 
came from New Zealand in the early 60s of last century.
  Following that for many years she lived at Makaweli, Kauai, but moved to 
California and made her home at Berkeley upon her marriage to Mendell Welcker 
of Berkeley.
  She remained however in close touch with the islands, making frequent visits 
to her hold home.
  Her husband died many years ago, but she is survived by her sister, Mrs. 
Aubrey Robinson, of Makaweli, Kauai, and by numerous nephews and nieces both 
in the islands and on the mainland.
