Orr jessicanorr@gmail.com October 29, 2014, 2:52 am Honolulu Star-Bulletin, Friday, February 19, 1943 Herman Wolters, Former Resident Dies On Mainland Herman Wolters, 70, former Kauai plantation manager, died at 2 a.m. Thursday at his home in Los Angeles, Cal., according to word received by his son, William Wolters of the Oahu Sugar Co. In addition to his son, Mr. Wolters is survived by the widow; a daughter, Mrs. Dudley Sniffen, and a grandson. Born in Bremen, Germany, on February 14, 1873, he came to Hawaii in 1888, when 15, to work for H. Hackfeld & Co., now American Factors. He was educated in public schools in Bremen. When 19, he started to learn the sugar business and served in various positions on the Lihue, Kekaha and Pioneer plantations. In 1914 he was placed in charge of the Hanamaulu section of Lihue Plantation Co., and in 1917 was appointed manager of the Makee Sugar Co., Kauai. Upon the absorption of the Makee company by Lihue plantation in 1934, Mr. Wolters retired after 46 years in the sugar industry. During his active career he also served as chairman of the board of trustees of the Mahelona memorial hospital at Kapaa, as a member of the prison board at Kauai, member of the advisory board of the Kauai branch of the Bank of Hawaii, and director of the Nawiliwili Transportation Co. After Mr. Wolters returned to the mainland, he lived with his wife and daughter on North Alta Vista Blvd, Los Angeles.
