YANAGIHARA. Mrs. Yanagihara, wife of Dr. K. Yanagihara of Kilauea, died unexpectedly Sunday afternoon. She was a woman not only prominent in the Japanese community but known and well liked among the people of other nationalities. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. M. Lydgate at the Kilauea church and were very largely attended by all classes from the whole surrounding country so that the church was crowded to overflowing. The services were unusually impressive and affecting because of the evidence of feeling that could be restrained only with difficulty. The grave was fairly smothered with a profusion of flowers which came without distinction from all classes and conditions of people, to all of whom she was a friend. Mary Yoshioka Yanagihara was born at Kalihiwai, Kauai, but spent most of her girlhood at Kapaa where her father was a contractor and luna on the plantation. She was educated at Kamehameha and the Normal School where she was an exceptionally apt student as well as a great favorite. On her return to Kauai, she was married to Dr. Yanagihara in 1902. A very excellent teacher, she has been very much in demand in that profession and has taught in the Kilauea schools during a good part of her married life. She was endowed with a charming personality that won her friends in all directions and was so modest and unassuming that it awakened no resentment or jealously. This personality was grounded in a fine character that could be counted on to be every day the same -- generous, unselfish, kindly, forgiving, forbearing. She was a beam of sunshine in any home and a benediction in any community. She was very dearly loved in the local community among all classes and will be very sadly missed.
