Hawaiian Archives ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ US Navy - " Arizona " Part 2 B. D-thru H. * Note ** The USS Arizona is a 608 foot Battleship and as originally built in 1916 and modernized in 1931. All battleship's were moored always facing southward toward the harbor's entrance on the east side of Ford Island and called Battleships Row. The explosion on the USS Arizona was in the forward magazine at 0805 and saved the Vestal as it was hit twice and the vacuum resulting from the Arizona's explosion put out the fires aboard the Vestal. Commander Cassin Young ordered the crew back to their stations and ordered the ship under way and moved the Vestal several yards from its berth. He ran the Veslal aground near Aiea landing. Cassin's efforts to save his men and ship won him the medal of Honor. Capt Franklin Van Valkenburg skippered the Arizona. ************************ Arizona -- US Navy.
