They had been ordered back to Pearl Harbor. They were due in at 0730 that morning but weather and refueling difficulties changed the Enterprise's arrival. The only flyable planes remaining were those of the USS Enterprise. In mid-afternoon, a B-17 from Hickam began a bomb run on what they believed to be a Japanese Carrier, but it was our carrier -- the USS Enterprise. Six fighters sent in from the Enterprise had trouble identifying their loaction because of the smoke and fire in the harbor, and flew past O'ahu. Halfway over the Molakai Channel, they realized their error and turned around. On their approach to Pearl Harbor, American anti-aircraft guns began to fire at them. Two of the pilots died when their plane crashed. two of the other pilots parachuted out, but one was killed before he landed. The remaining pilots landed with minor injuries. It is interesting of note here to mention that for days after the Pearl Harbor attack, bodies were being pulled from the water and wreakages. Burial parties were kept busy. The Navy dead were buried at O'ahu cemetery and temporarily at Red Hill. Those buried at Red Hill were later reinterred at Punchbowl Cemetery. The Army buried their dead at the Schoefield Barracks Cemetery. A majority of the wounded cases were flash burns ( third degree ) but they proved fatal because many were not fully clothed, and much of their skin had been exposed. Within 24 hours after the attack, Tripler General Hospital had admitted almost a thousand casualties. Because the hospital was over crowded, surgery ( including amputations ) was done in the hallways while patients were lying in stretchers. The wounded were being taken to Tripler, Queen's Hospital, the Pearl Harbor Naval Hospital and plantation dispensaries for treatment. All hospital ships in area were full, as all medical facilities were overflowing with casualties. Honolulu's Major Disaster Council went into action using every means of transportation. It went into an emergency ambulance service and sent much needed medical supplies to the military hospitals. ++++++++++++++++++ USS Enterprise CV- 6, Aircraft Carrier Mitchell Cohn RM3c Fred J. Afraid that if the ship sank, it would block the harbor entrance, Admiral Pye ordered it beached five minutes after its skipper, Captain Scanlan, came aboard. The Nevada had three officers and 47 enlised men killed, and five officers and 104 enlisted wounded. The Nevada was back in service before the end of 1942. Arnold L.
