USS Pennsylvania, USS Pruitt, USS Shaw, USS Sicard, USS Tennessee, USS Tracy, USS Utah and USS Vestal. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Part 6. USS Pennsylvania BB-38, Battleship * Note** When the Japanese raiders arrived over Pearl Harbor, the USS Pennsylvania was in the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard's large drydock and therefore was beyond the reach of the torpedoes that inflicted such devastation on four of the fleet's other heavy ships. Though bombers of the second wave attacked her, the Pennsylvania was directly hit only once, by a bomb that struck amidships, putting some of her five inch guns out of action but generally causing minor damage to the heavily constructed ship. Sixteen men died on the Pennsylvania. Robert E. Arnott PhM2c Henry E. Baker, Jr. Cox Charles Braga, Jr. Y2c Evan B. Brekken S1c Frederick A. Browne GM3c Harold K. Comstock S1c James E. She attracted the unwelcomed attention of several dive bombers of the second strike wave. These hit her with three bombs at about the same time as they were attacking the then thereby battleship Nevada. The bombs all hit the foreward portion of te ship. the resulting fires proved uncontrollable, and the Shaw was ordered abandoned. As efforts were underway to flood the drydock about a half hour after she was hit, her forward ammunition magazines detonated in a spectacular blast, completely removing her bow. The blast also punctured YFD-2 and Sotoyomo. Both soon sank, the drydock partially and the tug completely, leaving Shaw's after portion afloat, with an intense fire raging at its front. Zacek S1c ++++++++++++++ USS Utah AG-16, Target/Gunnery Training ship. * Note** The thirty year old Utah, which had been converted from an obsolete battleship ten years earlier, received two torpedoes, completely overwelming her very limited ability to absorb underwater damage. She capsized to port in about ten minutes, coming to rest with her bottom in the air. As Utah's crew were abandoning ship and simming through the oily water to Ford Island, they were the target of machine gun attacks by Japanese planes. Although ten trapped Sailors were later cut free from her upturned hull, about sixty were lost with their ship. Utah was partially turned upright in 1943-44, but was not further salvaged. Her remains are now the site of a memorial. Those who died are; William D. Arbuckle S2c Joseph Barta F1c Rudolph P. Bielka LT Comdr Virgil C. Bigham S1c John E. Black Lt (jg) John T.
