Cooke, kamaaina Molokai and territorial business and civic leader, and manager of Molokai Ranch, Ltd., will retire from active management of the ranch after 40 years of service, April 1, Mr. Cooke informed a representative of the Maui News Saturday. Mr. Cooke after April 1 will serve as president of the Molokai Ranch, Ltd. Succeeding Mr. Cooke to the management of the ranch will be Desmond Fitzgerald, at present assistant manager. John H. Midkiff Jr., of Waialua, Oahu, who has spent considerable time in ranching in Mexico, will be named to the assistant managership of the ranch. Mr. Midkiff joined the ranch staff on January 1 of this year. Mr. Cooke attended Yale university after preliminary schooling in Honolulu. He received his B.A. degree in 1905 and returned to Honolulu to become stock and bond clerk for the Hawaiian Trust Co., Ltd. In 1908 he became bookkeeper for the American Sugar Co., Ltd., and the Molokai ranch, and in 1910 was made manager of the two Molokai properties. In 1918 he became president of both concerns. He was a leader in the movement to make Molokai a source of food supply for Honolulu. In 1920 he established a model dairy ranch at Mapulehu, Molokai, and constructed the Leleiona, a motor boat of the sampan type, for the delivery of dairy produce to Honolulu. He has been interested in the Boy and Girl Scout movements and in 1935 was awarded the silver beaver by the Maui Council Boy Scouts of America. He has been a leader of many movements looking to the betterment and improvement of the island of Molokai, and was instrumental in starting the model Molokai community center. In 1921 he became executive officer of the Hawaiian homes commission. He resigned his position in 1924. During World War I he served as a volunteer aide of the naval intelligence bureau, and during World War II served as director of the office of civilian defense on Molokai. For many years Mr. Cooke represented Maui county in the territorial legislature, both as representative and senator. During the regular and special sessions of 1933, and the regular sessions of 1935, 1937 and 1939, he served as president of the senate. Mr. Cooke, who resides at Kauluwai, Molokai, belongs to many organizations and is a trustee of the Maui Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Fitzgerald is the son of Dr. and Mrs. J. C. Fitzgerald of Kula. He was named assistant manager of the Molokai Ranch, Ltd. in November, 1945 after being separated from the air corps as a lieutenant colonel. Prior to the war he was with the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co., Ltd. at Puunene as a harvesting luna. He was active here in polo and kennel club circles.
