Taylor of Hamakuapoko was receiving congratulations yesterday upon his 87th birthday. He was born in Manchester, England, in 1849, came to the states when 15 years old, and to Hawaii in 1878. He has been connected with the Maui Agricultural company for more than 50 years, retiring in March of this year. Taylor is probably the only person in Hawaii who claims to have heard Abraham Lincoln speak and shook his hand upon Lincoln's appearance at a reception in New York City. An item of particular interest, and treasured by his daughter, Mrs. E. R. Bevins, is an American flag, made by the Taylors when news of the annexation was received, and there was no flag available on the island. This is roughly 3 x 6 feet long, with the stripes of red and white sewn together, and 45 stars stenciled in white paint upon a field of blue. Although the flag was first flown at Hamakuapoko at a celebration on the day of annexation, a week later Prince Kuhio and his staff arrived on Maui with a huge silk flag which was received with much ceremony at a great luau held in his honor when formal notice of annexation was received. Five of Taylor's children are living on Maui, James Taylor of Kahului; Alfred Taylor and Mrs. H. Alfred Hansen of Puunene, Mrs. E. R. Bevins of Wailuku and Miss Maybelle E. Taylor of Hamakuapoko, while a son, Joseph resides in California. All the Maui children and grandchildren were present at a dinner given in his honor last night.
